Artist Statement
“In late 2014 I moved to North Carolina with my partner (now husband) to be closer to his mom, who now lives with us. At the time I was encouraged by what seemed to be the very slow but consistent progressive movement away from the Jesse Helms overt racist, homophobic culture of hate and bigotry. In March of @016 HB2 was passed and I realized this was not the case. I did not know anyone in the local Trans community or the local art community but knew I wanted to be involved in a creative statement of support for anybody impacted by this legislated horseshit and so I went searching. Luckily my search led me to meet Jordan Robinson, and eventually to meeting Mac McLaughlin. Mac was then the lead singer and frontman for a band named Unisex playing out in various places all over North Carolina. I now consider both men good friends. Think about it. Mac, an out and proud Trans activist in North Carolina getting onstage promoting inclusiveness, justice, equality, and love all while putting out some great rock'n roll. To me, that's more rock than Mick Jagger and out punks the Sex Pistols, it planted the seed for this piece. I wanted to do a portrait, a portrait of a man who is constantly on a mission of authenticity, a man who has been through it and is still full of empathy, compassion, and love, a man who won't be held back by convention and bitterness. A true soul singer. Because of this, I chose to work in concrete and plaster along with pastels, sand, and acrylic. A sturdy foundation upon which to build, a solid platform from which to soar. Oh yeah, lest I forget, this piece is about a Rock Star, whether on stage or not, singing his truth for the world to hear, breaking down barriers, saving lives, spreading joy. *And in a couple of weeks getting married to the fabulous Michelle.”
